… is Gilding the Silence

My Comfy Trench

Upon review of this week’s local “news rag” (now with extra pages of church news!!), I’m stumped as to which of the following items best illustrates our rural county’s “backwoods cred.”  Is it…

(A) One of the local fire departments being placed on suspension for, among other things, having two of the supposed firefighters brawling at the scene of a blaze which claimed a local business?  No Nero here in the sticks with a fiddle!  No, we’ve got the guys trying to protect us fighting each other while the town goes up in flames.  Firefighters indeed.

OR, could it possibly be…

(B) A couple of teenagers out 4-wheelin’ on the road who plowed into a cow?  Now, before you chuckle, it should be noted that the ATV came a rest 100 feet from the impact after hitting a truck as well, and the poor cow was tossed 30 feet, so it’s not like they were just cruising along.  And, in true daredevil hillbilly fashion, neither teenager was wearing headgear, so it won’t surprise you to hear that they required major medical attention.

Ugh.

Of course, next week’s rag will probably have a feature on something that happened as they were going to press last week, wherein a couple of kids in a passing car fired shots at a woman stopped at a stop sign…

Double ugh.

Wake me when the shooting war is over.  Until then, I’ll be huddled in my comfy trench.
